Minor White (1908-1976)

Minor White was a textural photographer and studied under Edward Weston.

White was a closet bisexual man and felt tormented through much of his life. His work reflects this spiritual journey searching for inner peace and simplicity.

White's use of light and texture in black and white photography, along with his recognition of an object or a form to communicate an emotion, I find most appealing.

Minor White also used a very particular process of shooting & printing to achieve the visual effect - you should look into that further. I like that you are thinking about the concept, in terms of the images revealing something about the photographer, or having a deeper connection to the image. There may be a way to connect this influence, or this concept with the Weston still lives. If you are going to show in B&W, shoot in color and use a black&white adjustment layer to convert them. Take a look at which originals (think color, lighting & exposure) give you the best results & then re-shoot.

I would love to see what you could do with concepts like this. Though I think the other photographer’s style seems more you and I’m sure you could rock at it, it would be nice to see what else you can branch out from while still using your excellent style of still life photography.

I think that still life is your thing. You do it so well. If your looking for natural and texture try using some fountains that are still running inside or out. I am curious with which one you choose and what you come up with for ideas. Missy
