Final Journal-The Magic of Christmas

THE MAGIC OF CHRISTMAS
I hear the snow falling; it speaks to me of childhood memories—
Of icicles, sled toboggans and men made of snow.
Things are different now, dreams are loftier and life has become busy. Where is the warmth and magic of the season, where is the snow from my childhood days?
The time has come to journey back, and as I travel my heart is awakened—
The magic of Christmas surrounds me like warm winters night,
the feeling I recall from yesterday’s past.

To capture the magic of Christmas, the canvas of the night was used.
Light placed on the backdrop, brought the images to life.
Depth and perspective draws the observer into the setting,
to kindle the joys of a once sleeping soul.
To experiment gives one the much-needed growth,
and for the love of the medium, the ability to move forward.
When all these steps are brought into play, what a wonderful combination,
that takes the eyes of the traveler—to recall memories from the heart.

Homage to Edward Weston: Blk and Wht Series

Edward Weston (1886 -1958)

Edward Weston photographed natural landscapes and still lifes. He utilized the subltle tones and sculptural design of the natural world such as shells, rocks, peppers and cabbages.

He began experimenting with modernism in the 1920's, in the late 1930's explored surrealism and abstract expressionism.

I am drawn to Weston's quest for the beauty and simplification of ordinary mundane objects.

Minor White (1908-1976)

Minor White was a textural photographer and studied under Edward Weston.

White was a closet bisexual man and felt tormented through much of his life. His work reflects this spiritual journey searching for inner peace and simplicity.

White's use of light and texture in black and white photography, along with his recognition of an object or a form to communicate an emotion, I find most appealing.
